It started as something simple enough. Four teenage boys,
some half-baked ideas, and a video camera. What is became
is something else, the greatest thing ever to hit Northern Kentucky Public Access.
That pretty much sums it up. That was the humble beginnings of Juicy Raoul. Those
four teenage boys were Bobby Buten, Cory Ament, Jeremy Chisenhall, and Mike Barker.
They started with only their imaginations and ended up with rabbit-like creatures
called gits. Well, that and other things.
It
all started when Cory got the idea that he and Bobby should take public access classes
at the local cable company. You just had to show up three consecutive Tuesday nights and
receive a little training. Once that was finished, the world was your oyster. Now I
know it is hard to believe any sensible cable company would just give out such expensive
equipment to high school boys, but for the world's sake, luckily they did.
Bobby and Cory took the classes and before long they were ready to film their first movie.
Cory wrote out a script about a guy, his best friend, and his lover. However before
filming Cory's masterpiece, Bobby and Cory decided to test out the equipment first.
Jeremy and Mike came over to Cory's house and the Search for the Holy Ale 8 was
filmed in one day. Everything didn't come out exactly right though. Several
scenes were accidentally cut short because of a failure to totally understand how the
camera worked. A few days passed and it was time for editing. Bobby and Cory put
the Search for the Holy Ale 8 together but didn't have a name yet for the movie. That
is when they first decided to use Juicy Raoul. The name came from when they were looking
for their friend, Raoul, and would say "Did you see Raoul?" Mr. Whitford, who
later would appear in Juicy Raoul: And the Pregnant Man with a Bad English Accent, mistook
what they were saying for "juicy Raoul" and so the name was born.
The Search for the Holy Ale 8 being only a one day shoot with nothing prepared, Bobby
and Cory decided a second movie was in order. Thoughts went back to Cory's original
work but it was decided something more adventurous was needed.
This time with the help of Jeremy again and
Bobby's sister Grethen, they got together at Bobby's house to film The Dead Chimp in a
Space Helmet. The chief villain in the movie, was named after a guy Bobby and Cory knew
named Phillip who looked like a chimp with his hair resembling a space helmet. Since three
of the original four appeared they decided to also use the Juicy Raoul name in this movie
ala Monty Python. In this movie, Bobby provided costumes for most of the characters.
An old Bugs Bunny mask was used for a character that was half-rabbit and half-man. This
character, known as the git, would go on to appear in every future film.
The third movie would be the last for founding member Cory. This movie was his baby
from start to finish. The Paleoclimatoligist with Mahomaitis was the first Juicy Raoul
movie to film over more than one day. This movie only features Cory, Bobby, and Jeremy
so with one person filming no scene contains more than two people. The third Juicy Raoul
was also the only honest attempt to make a drama.
After Cory left the group, Bobby decided to keep Juicy Raoul alive. The first and
third movies weren't received nearly and positive as the second so Bobby decided his
first solo project would be to make a sequel to the popular second movie. The Legend of
Chess Piece Face was the first movie written and edited solely by Bobby. This movie also
features by far the most actors. Filming over three days the major problem in shooting
was getting everyone together so the same role is played by multiple people through this
movie. This movie was filmed in the fall of 1994.
Bobby, a little tired of ultimate balls and bear men, decided to take another
direction for the fifth movie. This movie was planned out one night at Jeremy's house.
This is the only movie where original cast member Jeremy, better known as Chinsey,
was involved in the script stage. The Pregnant Man with a Bad English Accent was the
only Juicy Raoul film that took place during the winter. This made it the first movie
where a majority of the scenes where inside.
The final movie, The Secret Agent Git, only featured one of the original cast members,
Bobby. To this day it is still the best received of the Juicy Raoul films. Filming
took place during the summer and was by far the hottest of the shoots.
Will there ever be a seventh Juicy Raoul? Only time will tell but there hasn't
been one since 1996 so don't get your hopes up too much.
